The origin of the Order of the Temple is well known.
It is in the Holy Land that French knight Hugues de Payens, enduring numerous dangers to which the large numbers of European pilgrims were exposed, proposed the creation of a military and monastic order for the protection of defenceless pilgrims and crusaders against bandits and arabs.
