Constantine the Great, Roman Emperor, was marching with his army when he felt the need to receive help from the gods. The story tells he saw a cross of blazing light in the sky, with the words "in this sign thou shalt conquer". He adopted the phrase as the motto for his army, and won a series of decisive battles, which made him sole master of the Roman Empire from 324 BC.
