Buddha is a Sanskrit word which means "the awakened one". Buddhas are not gods. A Buddha is any being who has become fully awakened (enlightened), and has experienced Nirvana. In addition to Buddha Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha and founder of Buddhism, there are other Buddhas which are respected not as gods but rather as examples, accomplished spiritual Masters. Most famous: Amitabha is the Buddha in the Land of Ultmost Happiness (Pure Land) and Buddha Maitreya, the Buddha of the future, who is to appear on Earth after the teachings of the current Buddha Gautama, the Dharma, are no longer taught and are completely forgotten.
