Charoite is an unusual mineral and of rare occurrence, that belongs to the silicate family (the inosilicate group). According to local population, it can only be found in the Lake Baikal region. It is named after the nearby Charo River, an affluent of the Oliomka which joins the Lena river. Its name relates to the Russian word Chary meaning charm or magic.
