Though Quéribus castle resisted for around ten years after the fall of Montségur, the latter held a great symbolic value in the history of Occitanian Catharism. Montsegur castle became the last fortified camp of the persecuted Cathar church. The surrender of the castle on the 16th of March 1244 was marked by the burning at the stake of over 200 men and women who refused to renounce their faith. A commemorative plaque perpetuates their memory.
