Among the Celts, a legend tells of an old man personifying the power of speech, who drew a multitude of joyful followers and admirers attached to him by thin chains of gold and amber which linked their ears to the tip of his tongue. These men would not break this fragile but symbolic link, for they would rather follow thier spiritual guide towards wisdom. With the Romans, amber in all its forms
had various meanings, but the perfume produced by the combustion of amber was reserved for the temple of Jupiter, to manifest the raising of a "nectar" reserved for the most important of gods.
